Military and Veteran Student Services

3.06 CLASS ATTENDANCE

Absences due to military duty or veteran status (including service-related medical appointments where failure to appear might result in a loss of benefits), must be considered excused and the student must be allowed to make up missed work, to complete an equivalent assignment, or the professor and the student may mutually agree to waive the assignment without penalty. CALL TO ACTIVE DUTY POLICY

Students who are called to active duty during an academic term will be given an option to have grades “R” (No Report) or “I” (Incomplete) assigned to each of their courses.

DEPARTMENT OF RESIDENCE

Non-traditional housing options are available for veterans.

MILITARY CREDIT

Students having served in the United States Armed Forces:  Transfer credit is granted based on a credit evaluation of transcripts from previous academic institutions attended, plus the Joint Services Transcript (JST), or the Community College of the Air Force Transcript.  The University of Northern Iowa follows the American Council on Education (ACE) guidelines in accepting military credit. Military students may be granted 2 credits equivalent to Liberal Arts Core Category 1D Dimensions of Well-Being.  

PRIORITY REGISTRATION

UNI will grant military & veteran students priority registration based on classification.

APPLICATION FEE WAIVER

UNI will waive the application fee for potential military & veteran students, with proof of either a DD-214 or Joint Services Transcript.

IN-STATE RESIDENCY

UNI grants resident status for tuition and fee purposes to any qualified veteran, as defined by the Veteran Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 (VACAA), who enrolls. Spouses and dependent children are eligible for resident tuition if the veteran lives in Iowa. Any Iowa National Guard service member, whether a resident of Iowa or not, is also eligible.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS

UNI grants a military exemption for providing immunization documentation, as long as the military or veteran student provides a copy of their military ID or copy of their DD 214 papers.

BENEFITS ANNOUNCEMENTS

If you are receiving Chapter 1606 benefits, remember to confirm with the VA at the end of every month, letting them know you are still enrolled.  877-823-2378

If you are receiving INGSS, remember: DEADLINES - Applications must be submitted by 1 July for the Fall term and 1 December for the Spring term. Applications received after the suspense date will not be considered without an Exception to Policy (ETP) request.
